"BUCHER THAL" - 1896
BUCHER'S PIONEER LOG CABIN
REF: Dr JOHNS - HISTORY OF DENVER, PA
"The first dwelling house erected in Bucher Thal, that of
Hans Bucher, stood against the storms of many a hard winter,
sheltered many a generation of the Buchers and was the site of many a
quaint scene in "ye early days" of our county. It outlasted all the other
pioneer log cabins, even some that were built at a much later date.
It was replaced by the present farm house about 1855. At this time the
old house was sold at public sale to William Ebling, then residing
near Swamp Church, who had the logs sawed into material with which
to build his new house and barn. The buildings are those occupied (in
1896) by the family of the late Levi Ruth. The saw mill work
was done by John Bucher from north of Denver, who was then
in charge of Bucher's saw mill. The logs were in the main poplar and full
of nailsand spikes. John laughs as he tells how he spent half-days at a
time removing smith-made spikes before he could proceed with the work
of sawing. "Here the Buchers lived continuously, son succeeding father,
for upwards of one hundred and forty years - a fact that has no equal in
Bucher Thal and few in northern Lancaster County. It was in this house that
our Joseph Leisey as a child grew to manhood.
JOSEPH LEISY: Legend says he was indentured to a
John Bucher and was mentioned in his will. John Bucher, having
no children of his own, selected from a company of emigrants at the port of
Philadelphia, a boy and a girl, who had come to America penniless in search
of employment and homes. He paid the price of their passage whereupon
they became his indentured servants until the price was cancelled. The girl
married a Hibschman and went with a
Bucher family to Cornwall.
According to this history, the boy, Joseph Leisy, was sent away
to learn the weaver's trade; especially to master the difficult art of
weaving figures, then a new art in Pa. This he did and did it well, greatly
to the pleasure of John Bucher. When the years of his apprenticeship
were completed he was given a part of John Bucher's home and a loom
with which to follow his trade. Here he labored until 1799 when he
purchased a lot from Christan Wenger, and built a dwelling
house and shop. (County records show that Joseph Leisey purchased a
lot much earlier, about 1783, from Philip Beck.) When I visited Denver, in
1983, I was told that he had had his business on a lot pointed out to me,
which at the time had a very large dwelling on it. I do not know if it was the
same home in which our Joseph lived, but it was a very large home.
Fragmentary records in the Lancaster Historical Society Archives show that
Joseph Leisey married Sophia Snyder in 1784. The
record reads "Joseph Leiseg, son of deceased George Leiseg, and Sophia,
daughter of George Schnieder, September 19, 1784" - Even though the
spelling of names in records at that time was not very exact, we can not
yet be sure if this is the same Joseph Leisey. If indeed, Joseph gave his
father's name as George, it would help in any search back to Germany.
There was a Hans Jerrick Lyssy, that came to America aboard the
ship "Peggy" in 1753.
