CHARLES ROLAND IS CHARGED WITH SHANKLIN'S DEATH: Injuries Received
In Struggle Fatal and Arrest Made This Morning: Charles Roland, 324 East
Washington Street, was arrested this morning by detectives Fredericks and
Philo and booked at the police office on a charge of manslaughter.
The arrest came as a result of the death at the San Joaquin general
hospital last night of Sylvester Shanklin. Shanklin was brought to the
emergency hospital on December 12th, suffering from injuries to his
spine which paralyzed him from the waist down. In a statement to
the police he said that he had been struck by Roland and knocked from the
porch of the Roland home, on East Washington Street. According to the
story told the police by Roland, Shanklin roomed at his home about
three months ago, but was requested to move, owing to his habit
of being intoxicated and of bringing women to the house.
On the day of the assault which resulted in Shanklin's death, Roland was
away from home, and when he returned he found Shanklin and Mrs. Roland
struggling on the porch of the dwelling. Shanklin had returned to the
house in Roland's absence and had demanded that he be allowed to resume
his occupancy of a room, Res. Roland said, and when she refused him
admittance he crated a disturbance. When she attempted to get him to
leave the porch he fell down, and in trying to get him on his feet again
he seized her arm and refused to release her. At that point, according
to the story of Roland, he returned to his home and found the
struggle in progress. He struck Shanklin in an effort to make him
release Mrs. Roland, and Shanklin then fell from the porch, landing on
the back on the ground below. When it was seen that he was badly injured
he was removed to the emergency hospital, where it was found that he
was unableto move his lower limbs. - " Stockton [California] Daily Evening Record", December 29, 1920.
